Review: 60165 4 x 4 Response Unit

Review: 60165 4 x 4 Response Unit

The prices of LEGO products are notoriously varied across the world but the majority conform to a broad pattern of comparative value between different countries and currencies. 60165 4 x 4 Response Unit inverts this trend entirely and is priced at a very reasonable £19.99 in the UK against $39.99 in the US!

I was therefore drawn to this set as a result of its excellent value and the satisfying selection of vehicles included, each of which is perfectly designed for play but would also be very suitable for a substantial city display in my opinion.

What do you call a brick dinosaur?

What do you call a brick dinosaur?

One year from today in the USA (and significantly less in the UK) Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will be released.

Frank Marshall, one of the film’s Executive Producers, tweeted the poster, name, and tagline of the film today. As with all properties that have been associated with our beloved building brick, we can’t help but wonder, what will the sets look like? Will we get new dinosaurs? Will Jeff Goldblum get his second LEGO minifigure? Will we even GET any LEGO Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom sets?

Although we don’t have the answer to those questions, we can look back at the 16-year history this famous franchise has with the LEGO Group. So let’s go on a paleontological dig through the history of LEGO and Jurassic Park!

You can view our transliterations and discover the hidden secrets of the enormous 70620 NINJAGO City, as well as some of the standard retail sets, after the break...

Berlin flagship store opens today

Berlin flagship store opens today

LEGO has opened another flagship store today, in Berlin, although I believe it's not actually a new store, it's just the old one that has been 'souped-up', as it were.

Our good friend Andres from Zusammengebaut attended the press event this morning and has posted a number of images, including of what is said to be the biggest pick-a-brick wall in Europe.

As you'd expect there are a number of opening offers over the next few days: details below.

Go inside 70620 NINJAGO City with Yahoo

The beautiful direct-to-consumer 70620 NINJAGO City was just revealed by LEGO earlier today, set to be released on September 1st in LEGO Brand Stores and at shop.LEGO.com.

Weighing in at almost 5000 pieces, it is the biggest set released under the NINJAGO line - already dwarfing 70618 Destiny's Bounty with number of parts and making 70751 Temple of Airjitzu look like a baby. It is also the third biggest set of all time - 10189 Taj Mahal and 10179 Ultimate Collector's Millennium Falcon still beat it out.

How does such an impressive set - with so many references, details and a status as the flagship set of a significant product line - get developed? Yahoo has gone behind the scenes and you can read their article here, featuring stunning concept art from the upcoming film and more.

Review: 76082 ATM Heist Battle

Review: 76082 ATM Heist Battle

The Marvel Super Heroes theme has been running since 2012 but Spider-Man was first introduced to LEGO almost a decade earlier as products were released in conjunction with the acclaimed first two films in Sam Raimi's trilogy. 76082 ATM Heist Battle is reminiscent of some of the original sets, depicting a fairly mundane crime from which super villains are absent.

I find this quite charming as Super Heroes sets have rarely tackled such subject matter in recent years. Furthermore the two robbers included are wearing Avengers masks, just as in the first Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer, which is a delightful touch. However, the relative lack of major characters may detract from the appeal of this set, particularly given the impressive roster found in the larger 76083 Beware the Vulture.

Store calendar reveals 'Iconic Cave' set

Store calendar reveals 'Iconic Cave' set

LEGO has just published the European brand store calendar for July and August, which has revealed a number of enticing offers set to coincide with what is probably the slowest time of year for retail sales of indoor toys.

  • 40251 Mini Piggy Bank free with purchases over £50/55€, 1-31 July
  • 40265 Tic-Tac-Toe free with Friends purchases, 3 July-13 August
  • 5004936 Iconic Cave free with purchases over £25/30€, 10 August - 30 August

The figures in the cave set appear to be very similar to collectable minifigures 8683 Caveman and 8805 Cave Woman but with new print and hairpiece colours.

It can be a job keeping track of LEGO's myriad of offers so to help you we have a calendar on the top of the Buy page that lists all that we are aware of.

Find the ninja within ya - new NINJAGO Movie poster revealed

"FIND THE NINJA WITHIN YA"; that's the advice emblazoned on this new, action-packed poster for Warner Bros. Pictures' The LEGO NINJAGO Movie, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.

In it, Kai (Michael Peña), Jay (Kumail Nanjiani), Cole (Fred Armisen), Zane (Zach Woods) and Nya (Abbi Jacobson) descend from a bamboo forest, led by Green Ninja Lloyd Garmadon (Dave Franco). What are they up to? Who knows! All I know is that a second trailer, and the film itself, can't come soon enough.

The LEGO NINJAGO Movie arrives in theaters on September 22nd. Let us know what you think of the poster in the comments below, and catch a larger photo after the break!

A Father's Day surprise from the NINJAGO Movie

A Father's Day surprise from the NINJAGO Movie

Thought The LEGO NINJAGO Movie news was over for now? Not quite, fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your stance)! In addition to the 70613 Garma Mecha Man images from earlier today, more Lord Garmadon related news comes in the form of a tweet from NINJAGO design lead Simon Lucas.

In the tweet, Simon wishes us a happy 'Garmadon Day', of course referencing the fact that Garmadon is Lloyd's father. He also attaches an interesting photo with a brand new variant of Garmadon. The photo portrays Garmadon exhibiting a brown business suit, tie, toupee, papers and mug. The orange mug sports the text "NINJAGO's #1 DAD", with the word 'I'M' humorously scribbled in above it. Take a look at a larger photo, and further analysis, after the break...

Review: 75185 Tracker I

Review: 75185 Tracker I

The Freemaker Adventures was introduced last year and yielded two sets in 2016. Two more have been released this summer, the smaller of which is 75185 Tracker I. This striking vessel has clearly taken inspiration from existing TIE series craft and looks very impressive, with three sleek wings arranged around an unusual hexagonal cockpit module.

I was not initially drawn to this set on the basis that the characters were of little interest to me but it has proven to be a very pleasant surprise. Not only does the model look brilliant on display but it is absolutely packed with detail and play features, making best possible use of the limited space available without affecting the appearance of the exterior.

Review: 10742 Willy's Butte Speed Training

Review: 10742 Willy's Butte Speed Training

LEGO produced almost thirty sets based on Cars and Cars 2 but a couple of significant characters were left out, one of whom was Sheriff. 10742 Willy's Butte Speed Training is therefore a very appealing prospect as the set includes Sheriff along with a brand new version of Lightning McQueen and some interesting accessories which could form part of any Cars display.

The Cars 3 range differs from previous sets in that it forms part of the Juniors theme, employing relatively simple construction methods and plenty of printed elements. I was concerned that the simplified vehicles of the 2017 selection would look odd beside the more traditional cars released in 2011 and 2012. In fact, they match up perfectly and I would have no hesitation in displaying the new cars alongside the original models!

What do you collect?

What do you collect?

Are you a LEGO collector? I suspect that, to some extent, most visitors to Brickset are.

There are so many LEGO products released these days that nobody can collect everything so most of us specalise in one particular area of interest.

For many, it will be Star Wars, Super Heroes, or some other licensed property in which we have an interest. For others, it will be far more niche.

I've been collecting LEGO since emerging from my dark ages in 1994 but I don't often make the effort to collect everything of anything in particular, but I do have one almost complete collection that is somewhat specialised: polybags in the number range 30000-30999.

Find out more about my collection after the break and let us know what you collect, and how successful you are at doing so, in the comments.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie set images

Images for the boxed retail sets have been published by many LEGO fan sites over the last few days but we wanted to wait until a legitimate source could be cited before doing so, per our novelty policy.

I have to say, some look pretty cool!

You'll find them all in the database.

Minifigure Tagging

Minifigure Tagging

A couple of years ago we introduced the set tagging feature which allows you to view lists of related sets and makes it easier to search the database using keywords. A similar system is now being implemented for minifigures so you can browse the minifigure database according to character type, affiliation and numerous other factors.

For instance, you might wish to view a list of all the Astromech Droids which have been released and that is now possible thanks to the new tagging system. At the moment we have only provisionally completed the Star Wars minifigures but we will be moving onto other themes shortly.

Let us know if you have any suggestions for further tags in the comments.

Interview with BrickHeadz designers Austin and Marcos

LEGO BrickHeadz have received a mixed reception among AFOLs: you either love 'em or loathe 'em, it seems. However, I think we can all agree that they are an interesting product line, particularly given that they evolved from a personal project.

At the LEGO Fan Media Days at the start of the month we had a chance to talk to Austin Carlson, who came up with the original concept, and Marcos Bessa, who is now working on them, to find out how they came about and what the future holds for the series. We also discussed Austin's role as graphic designer and his input to the collectable minifig series.

Review: 40226 Birthday Buddy

Review: 40226 Birthday Buddy

Every year LEGO produces a number of sets that are destined to be sold only in particular shops or countries. They are usually numbered in the 40xxx series. Their limited availability makes many of them difficult to acquire and thus, to me at least, more desirable.

40226 Birthday Buddy is one such set. It was introduced last year and I had hoped it would surface in brand stores but, alas, it wasn't to be: it seems it was sold only in Asia. I therefore had to resort to the secondary market to buy it.

Thankfully the Star Bricksnesia store on BrickLink has a large number in stock for a reasonable price ($11.90). I placed a order a week or so ago, and two arrived in perfect condition yesterday.

So, what exactly is a birthday buddy? And what inspired the design?

Review: 76083 Beware the Vulture

Review: 76083 Beware the Vulture

76083 Beware the Vulture is the larger of the two Spider-Man: Homecoming sets which have recently been released and is by far the more interesting in my opinion. The Vulture himself is exclusive to this set and comes with a huge wing assembly which looks tremendous in the official images, as does the colourful Shocker figure.

It is unusual to see all four main characters from a film in a single set but that certainly seems to be the case here. Furthermore, the relatively modest price of £44.99 or $39.99 increases its appeal very significantly and the set therefore seems likely to be among the most popular of the summer, depending on the success of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

NINJAGO website updated to reflect movie

NINJAGO website updated to reflect movie

The LEGO movie news keeps on rolling, with an update to the NINJAGO theme microsite at LEGO.com, which has been given a makeover to represent the forthcoming spinoff The LEGO NINJAGO Movie. You'd think they would just launch a new site for the film instead of changing the existing one, to avoid confusion between the different universes... but I digress.

You can watch the first trailer there, or download the teaser poster if you so choose. A new WU-CRU mission has also been added, in which you must identify the new looks of each of the six ninja. You can check out the high-quality minifigure photos that are supplied there after the break.

Star Wars Battlefront II

Star Wars Battlefront II

Star Wars Battlefront II will be released in November and plenty of footage has emerged over the last few days as we approach E3 2017. Star Wars Battlefront received a mixed reception in 2015 but yielded two excellent Battle Packs and I am hoping that the upcoming video game will also form the basis for a couple of sets.

This installment encompasses characters, vehicles and locations from across the entire Star Wars saga so there is plenty of material from which LEGO might draw inspiration, particularly where Battle Packs are concerned.
