Panama Canal educational set now available with free worldwide shipping

Panama Canal educational set now available with free worldwide shipping

At the start of the month I mentioned that the limited edition LEGO Education set 2000451 The Panama Canal can now be purchased from Panama STEM.

As of today it's available with free worldwide shipping by DHL, a saving of $40-50.

The 1184-piece set demonstrates how the canal, a marvel of modern engineering, operates and is priced at $249.95.

I believe that 40,000 have been produced so they are not going to be around forever. If you're a collector of the rare and unusual then do not hesitate in placing an order at the Panama STEM website.

Look out for our review of it in a couple of weeks, and in the meantime you'll find some 'out of box' pictures after the break.

Review: 70618 Destiny's Bounty

Review: 70618 Destiny's Bounty

The LEGO NINJAGO Movie range seems to have captured the attention of almost everyone, even those who have expressed little previous interest in NINJAGO. 70618 Destiny's Bounty is perhaps the foremost motivating factor for this trend as more fantastical aspects of the theme have been omitted in favour of realistic design features and an exceptional level of detail which is in evidence throughout the entire model.

Furthermore, the set contains 2295 pieces and is priced at just £109.99 or $159.99 so appears to offer tremendous value for money! Most of The LEGO NINJAGO Movie sets are similarly reasonably priced but this is a particularly good example. I therefore have very high expectations for the set and it could prove to be one of the best of 2017, although there is a great deal of competition for such an accolade this year.

Review: Beasts from Bricks

Review: Beasts from Bricks

If you like your brick-built animals, as I do, then this is a book for you. It's sort of a sequel to last year's Birds from Bricks, by Thomas Poulsom, but this one is authored by Ekow Nimako who resides in Toronto.

The 144-page softback book contains 15 step-by-step instructions for building a variety of animals from around the world.

Review: 40264 Build My Heartlake City Accessory Kit

Review: 40264 Build My Heartlake City Accessory Kit

The Captain reviewed 40170 Build My City Accessory Set earlier this month. Today we'll take a look at 40264 Build My Heartlake City Accessory Set. Like the City accessory set, there are no minidolls with this set and it consists of a series of smaller builds. The general scene is set in a park, so to me it's a little reminiscent of a smaller version of last year's City Fun in the Park set. Will this be a promising little pack like the City set?

Review: 5004936 Iconic Cave

5004936 Iconic Cave is currently free with purchases over £25/30€/$50 at shop.LEGO.com.

It's the third minifig-in-a-box set, following last year's 5004468 Iconic Easter Minifigure and 5005156 Gingerbread Man.

This one, however, contains two minifigs, both of which are unique to it, rather than being straight copies of collectable minifigures.

Review: DC Super Heroes Build Your Own Adventure

Review: DC Super Heroes Build Your Own Adventure

Dorling Kindersley has been publishing books containing at least one minifigure alongside a small vehicle since 2010 and DC Super Heroes Build Your Own Adventure is the most recent addition to the range. It costs £17.99 or $24.99 but has already been discounted in certain locations just a couple of weeks after release.

I have been looking forward to purchasing the book based purely on the inclusion of an exclusive John Stewart Green Lantern minifigure and I imagine most LEGO Super Heroes collectors will be drawn to it for the same reason.

Review: 30497 First Order Heavy Assault Walker

Review: 30497 First Order Heavy Assault Walker

A selection of sets based on Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be available from the 1st of September but 30497 First Order Heavy Assault Walker has been released slightly early in a few Canadian Wal-Mart stores. This 54-piece model depicts the AT-M6, a new kind of attack walker deployed by the First Order which first appeared in the teaser trailer for the upcoming film.

A larger version of the AT-M6 is also among the first wave of Star Wars: The Last Jedi sets and several other companies are producing toys based on the vehicle. It therefore seems likely that it will occupy a significant role in the movie, presumably in a pivotal action scene set on the mineral-rich planet of Crait.

Review: 70610 Flying Jelly Sub

Review: 70610 Flying Jelly Sub

Garmadon leads an army of aquatic villains in his conquest of NINJAGO City and 70610 Flying Jelly Sub is one of the more outlandish vehicles which take part in the attack. It is designed to resemble a jellyfish so includes a large translucent cockpit dome and six tentacles which are arranged in a circle and look superb.

Most of the 341 pieces are dedicated to the vehicle belonging to the villains but the set also comes with a thoroughly impressive boat and four excellent minifigures. It certainly seems to offer good value at a price of £24.99 or $29.99, a quality which applies to almost the entire range in my opinion!

Review: 41497 Spider-Man & Venom

Review: 41497 Spider-Man & Venom

A total of 25 BrickHeadz figures have been released so far and it has quickly become clear that those sporting an elaborate hairstyle or an unusual costume are often the most impressive. I have therefore been somewhat sceptical about 41497 Spider-Man & Venom as the web-slinging hero wears a simple skintight suit and Venom is similarly attired but for some black tendrils.

However, this set includes an impressive array of printed elements which are packed with detail and I love the bright colour scheme, contrasting with the somewhat muted shades of 41496 Supergirl & Martian Manhunter. Hopefully these aspects of the figures will make up for the perceived unsuitability of the source material.

Humble Bundle of LEGO Robotics Books

Humble Bundle of LEGO Robotics Books

Looks like the folks at Humble Bundle are at it again! This time around, the "pay what you want" service is offering a fantastic array of books by Apress aimed at helping you delve into the world of Lego Robotics. The titles being offered include books on LEGO Technic, EV3 and Mindstorms, as well as some general books on robot creation and a few titles devoted to programming in Arduino, Python, Raspberry Pi and C if you care to dabble in those.

You might be thinking, "Great, but I don't really have an interest in robotics". And if you were, I would be quick to mention that EV3 doesn't just have to be for robots. It can be quite an effective way to animate your MOCs and Arduino's capabilities can extend to fine control over lighting in your MOCs. (But, that is another story for another day.)

Competition winning model turned into Friends set

Competition winning model turned into Friends set

Earlier this year LEGO ran a competition to design a Friends model with the prize being having it turned into a boxed product, complete with a mini-doll representation of the winner. A dream prize for kids, for sure!

The winner was 8-year old Sienna from the UK whose submission was a playground, complete with slide, swings and roundabout, something that was missing from Heartlake City.

I'm not sure when the resultant set, 41325 Heartlake City Playground, is being released but official images have been published and you'll find them over at Heartlake Times, along with an interview with Kristel, an AFOL who was involved with judging the competition.

What luck that the winner has a name not already used in the Friends universe...

Review: 76087 Flying Fox: Batmobile Airlift Attack

Review: 76087 Flying Fox: Batmobile Airlift Attack

Batman's Flying Fox seems certain to occupy a significant role in the upcoming Justice League movie, transporting the heroic team around the world as they attempt to defeat Steppenwolf and his army of vicious Parademons. 76087 Flying Fox: Batmobile Airlift Attack is accordingly the largest of the three sets based on the film.

Not only does the set include the enormous Flying Fox and an updated model of the Batmobile but also an impressive selection of six minifigures and even a brick-built incarnation of Steppenwolf himself. However, little information has been made available surrounding the capabilities of the Flying Fox and the price of £99.99 or $129.99 seems rather high so I am not entirely sure what to expect of this set.

Old Fishing Store designer signing events

Old Fishing Store designer signing events

The next LEGO Ideas set 21310 Old Fishing Store is due for release on September 1st and just ahead of that its fan designer Robert Bontenbal will be taking a whirlwind tour around Europe signing the set at events in London, Paris, Berlin and Copenhagen:

  • August 24, 1-4pm, LEGO Store Leicester Square
  • August 25, 1-4pm, LEGO Store Paris Forum les Halles
  • August 26, 10am-1pm, LEGO Store Berlin
  • August 27, 12-3pm, LEGO Store Copenhagen

The dates were announced in a video uploaded by LEGO a few days ago, Anton's Cat Adventures, a stop-frame animation set in the fishing store.

We hope to be in attendance at the London event.

What with this set, Ninjago City and something BIG, September's going to be an expensive month!

The next Ideas set after this one, Women Of NASA, is scheduled for release on December 1st.

Review: 76086 Knightcrawler Tunnel Attack

Review: 76086 Knightcrawler Tunnel Attack

Batman is almost always accompanied by an extensive arsenal of specialised vehicles in films, television series and comics, a number of which sometimes seem rather odd. The four-legged Knightcrawler depicted in 76086 Knightcrawler Tunnel Attack is a particularly unusual example and has been designed for use in extremely difficult terrain, hence the combination of articulated legs and standard tyres.

This bizarre design provoked considerable criticism when the first images of the set were released and it is easy to see why. We have very little knowledge of the Knightcrawler in the movie and it is therefore difficult to assess the quality of the model, particularly since it looks unlike any previous Batman vehicle. Nevertheless, the set includes some excellent minifigures and appears as though it should offer excellent play value.

85 years of LEGO!

85 years of LEGO!

Today marks the 85th anniversary of LEGO's foundation by Ole Kirk Kristiansen. The company and its products have changed a great deal since then as wooden toys were superseded by plastic interlocking bricks and this famed system of play has subsequently allowed LEGO to become the largest toy manufacturer in the world.

LEGO has achieved this success through constant innovation and choosing a single favourite example of such advancement is difficult. Nevertheless, we are challenging Brickset readers to do just that so would ask which of the many innovations made throughout LEGO's history has been the most welcome from your perspective?

Might it be the creation of the minifigure in 1978, the advent of licensed themes in 1999 or something else entirely? Let us know in the comments below.

Review: 41496 Supergirl & Martian Manhunter

Review: 41496 Supergirl & Martian Manhunter

The BrickHeadz range was introduced at San Diego Comic-Con last year and returned at the 2017 event with two more exclusive sets, each of which contains a pair of figures. 41496 Supergirl & Martian Manhunter depicts the DC characters as they appear in the Supergirl television series so represents the first acknowledgement of the 'Arrowverse' within the BrickHeadz theme.

This set includes 234 pieces, surpassing all four of the twin packs released at the 2016 convention, so I am hoping to see some unusual building techniques and a high level of detail in these figures. However, characters featuring vivid colours are often better suited to BrickHeadz models than those who wear darker attire, leaving me a little sceptical about the suitability of these heroes from the Supergirl series.

Another teaser for something BIG!

Another teaser for something BIG!

A cryptic image teasing the imminent announcement of an enormous new set was published on LEGO's Twitter feed last week and another has arrived today. This one compares the instruction manual for the upcoming set with that belonging to 10257 Carousel, stating that the spiral bound manual is precisely 2.56 times bigger than the 196-page booklet for the Creator Expert set.

That would yield a total count of 502 pages, far surpassing even the 316-page manual for 2007's 10179 Ultimate Collector's Millennium Falcon!

It seems very likely that a third teaser image will be published next Tuesday given the emerging pattern so keep an eye on Brickset for further coverage.

BrickHeadz competition reminder

BrickHeadz competition reminder

Our BrickHeadz competition is still underway and we've received hundreds of fantastic and imaginative entries on Flickr and Instagram.

We have dozens of sets to give away including Batman Movie, Ninjago Movie, Minecraft, BrickHeadz and loads more, and we've enlisted LEGO BrickHeadz designer Marcos Bessa to help with the judging.

We'll be accepting entries until the end of August so if you've not already submitted yours, get building ASAP! Most entries have been produced digitally in LDD or similar so my advice is to submit brick-built models, which will be judged separately, to be in with a better chance of winning.

We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Return of the Millennium Falcon?

Return of the Millennium Falcon?

10179 Ultimate Collector's Millennium Falcon represents the core of the enormous LEGO Star Wars range and was released in 2007 to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of Star Wars. Now, ten years later it seems increasingly likely that an updated version of the famous freighter will soon be announced before becoming available in September.

This news will be well received by many, including myself, as the original UCS Millennium Falcon remains very popular today and accordingly demands an exceptionally high price on the secondary market. However, the standard of updated Ultimate Collector's Series sets has been fairly mixed as while some represent a considerable improvement, others advance very little. Improving upon the tremendous 10179 Ultimate Collector's Millennium Falcon presents a particularly difficult challenge but I think there is the potential for some exciting innovation.
